It is with the greatest sadness that we have learned of the passing of one of the notable figures in the history of Broughty Ferry YMCA, Harry Nicoll. Harry joined the Association on completion of his National Service in 1952 and served the Association at Board level until1990 as Secretary and Treasurer for 11 and 37 years respectively.
It would be fair to say that he revived the Association after World war II and drove it through the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s onto a solid foundation. He was made a Life Member in April 1972, Honorary President in 1988 and was appointed one of the Trustees of the building in 1975. On 25th April 1992 he was awarded a Distinguished Service Plaque from the National Council of YMCA’s in Scotland for his outstanding service.
Harry passed away on August 4th aged 92 and was buried on Friday 11th August at Western Cemetery in Arbroath. He will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by all at Broughty Ferry YMCA and those in the wider YMCA movement. He is survived by his wife Rachel, who it goes without saying he met through the YMCA and we send our condolences to her, his children and grandchildren.
