In July 2018, YMCA Glenrothes secured funding from the Bank of Scotland Foundation to aid the delivery of Follow on Support for residents moving on to their own tenancies.

The YMCA has found that tenancy support can be lacking for individuals who are allocated tenancies throughout Fife. These hurdles are often overwhelming.  Without the right type of support  the chances of failure and abandonment are increased for many tenants.

Olive, a long standing Case Worker with YMCA, was appointed to support those moving on from Y Supported Accommodation.  For example, many find it difficult to attend housing appointments, deal with energy suppliers, manage money effectively and register with a local GP, as well as sourcing their own furniture, carpets, white goods and bedding.

However, the  funding ensures that support for individuals can be provided for up to one year. Throughout 2019-20 we are proud to report that this service has allowed 33 people to become self sufficient, and successfully sustain their own tenancy within the local community.  This has demonstrated a real cost saving to the local authority of over £149,000 with none having to re-enter temporary accommodation.

Thanks to Follow on Support, for many residents moving into their own home has now become a positive experience.

We hope to continue to reduce the number of times that an individual could potentially lose their tenancy and be faced with the detrimental impact of becoming  homeless again.
