The YMCA was founded in 1844 by George Williams, a young man who wanted to create a safe place for people in the midst of industrial change. What started as a small community in London quickly grew into a global movement. Today, the YMCA is active in over 120 countries, supporting millions of people every single day.
Along the way, the YMCA has made its mark in surprising ways:
Basketball and volleyball were both invented in YMCA gyms.
YMCA hostels gave travellers and workers a safe and affordable place to stay.
And at every step, the focus has been on young people, belonging, and community.

Over 180 years later, the YMCA has grown into a global force for good. Every single day, the YMCA is helping people find belonging, build skills, and create brighter futures.
With over 1,000,000 volunteers and members of staff stretched across 12,000+ global branches, the YMCA is able to reach around 65 million people every year.

YMCA Kilmarnock is affiliated to YMCA Scotland, meaning we are part of a network of 24 locally autonomous youth charities in Scotland.
This structure enables every YMCA to respond to the needs of their local communities, and puts local people at the heart of local YMCA decision making and governance.
YMCAs work in communities with the highest levels of social, economic, health and education needs. Working in the heart of communities, YMCA supports children, young people and their families to achieve their fullest potential
We work alongside partners in social work, other voluntary organisations, police, education and local churches.
Much of our work is delivered by volunteers and each local YMCA is governed by local people who make up the Board of Trustees.
